Do you have a plan if a natural disaster hits, like a hurricane, tornado, fire, or Earthquake? If so, good for you! Do you have a plan for your smile in case you experience a dental emergency? If not, our Premier Dentistry of Eagle team is happy to help you!
If you have a plan for a dental disaster, then you’ll be prepared during those stressful times. When making your plan, your dentist, Dr. Shane S. Porter, and our dental team encourage you to include the following things in the written details:
-For a knocked-out tooth: If you’ve knocked a tooth out of place, then try to find the tooth, or the pieces of the tooth, and keep it in a safe place. The only way your dentist can put it back into place is if it’s still alive. So, keep it alive by putting it between your gums and cheek, in a glass of milk, or in a glass of water with a pinch of table salt. You can also purchase a tooth-preservation product at the store.
-For a broken bridge or crown: If you’ve broken a dental bridge or dental crown, don’t wiggle or play with it. Playing or wiggling it could harm the abutment underneath. If it has fallen out of your mouth, keep the restoration in a safe place and take it into your dental appointment. If possible, use over-the-counter dental cement and cement it back into place until you can see your dentist.
-For broken braces: If you’ve broken a piece of your braces, call your orthodontist so you don’t delay your treatment time. Until your appointment, cover the section of the appliance that is bothering you with orthodontic wax.
-For an injured tongue: If you’ve injured your tongue, rinse your mouth with lukewarm saltwater and place a wet washcloth or gauze pad over the injury. Apply pressure if possible to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding hasn’t stopped in about 30 minutes, it’s best to visit the nearest urgent care facility.
