APPOINTMENTS

Can I Request an Appointment Online, or Should I Call the Office?

You can contact our office online, or call the office at (208) 546-0655 to schedule an appointment.

Should I Arrive Early for My First Appointment?

There is a downloadable patient form for you to fill out prior to your appointment. If you are unable to do that, please arrive 10-15 minutes early in order to fill out the paperwork prior to your appointment.

What Should I Bring to My First Appointment?

Be sure to bring your insurance card if you have dental insurance.  Adults should also bring a form of ID, such as a driver’s license or state ID card. Also bring any medical information, such as prescription medications, medical conditions (such as diabetes or cancer) and the medical treatment for such conditions.

How Long Will My Appointment Last?

While most dental checkups generally last an hour, at times there will be additional procedures depending on your current oral health. Each routine checkup begins with a consultation with Dr. Porter, including a review of your current and past medical history. Please allow plenty of time in order to have a complete and thorough examination.

What Should I Expect at My Appointment?

A dental hygienist will professionally clean and polish your teeth, removing any buildup of plaque and tartar on the surfaces of your teeth and along your gum line. Typically, you’ll have x-rays to find problems that can’t be seen with the naked eye. Read more about digital x-rays below.

PREVENTIVE CARE

How Often Should I Floss?

The American Dental Association (ADA) flossing at least once a day. Some prefer to floss in the evening before bedtime so that your mouth is clean while sleeping.

Is It Better to Use an Electric or Manual Toothbrush?

Brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, is the foundation of good oral care and prevention. According to the ADA, both electric and manual toothbrushes are effective at removing oral plaque if used properly. In general, electric toothbrushes decrease more plaque and gingivitis than manual toothbrushes. One study found that after three months of using an electric toothbrush, plaque was reduced by 21 percent and gingivitis by 11 percent and rotating toothbrushes tend to work better than vibrating toothbrushes. There are several pros and cons to weigh for either type; just make sure to get a toothbrush that is approved by the ADA.

How Many Times a Year Should I Go to the Dentist?

The ADA recommends seeing your dentist at least two times each year in order to maintain optimal health and hygiene for your teeth. Even if you take excellent care of your teeth and gums at home, you still need to see Dr. Porter regularly. He can check for problems that you may not be able to see or feel. Many dental problems aren’t visible or don’t cause pain until they are in more advanced stages. Examples include cavities, gum disease and oral cancer. Regular visits allow Dr. Porter to find problems early so they can be treated during a manageable stage.

DIGITAL X-RAYS

How Safe are Traditional Dental X-Rays, and Are the New Digital X-Rays Better?

Dr. Porter uses digital x-rays to help diagnose your dental health with accuracy and speed. In addition to the improvements in your comfort, digital x-rays are superior in every way. The images are bigger and the quality of the image is exceptional.

  • Digital x-rays use up to 90 percent less radiation than conventional x-rays.
  • Digital x-rays have superior image quality, yielding a better diagnosis.
  • Traditional imaging was often an uncomfortable and painful experience, especially for those with a smaller mouth.
  • Digital x-ray equipment is a handheld device that is much more comfortable than conventional x-rays of the past.
  • Film x-rays require a minimum of 10 minutes to process. By contrast, images from digital x-rays don’t require harmful chemicals for processing.

FAMILY DENTISTRY

I Am Pregnant. Is It Safe to Make a Dental Appointment in This Condition?

Routine dental exams are encouraged during pregnancy due to the increased risks of periodontal disease, the most severe form of gum disease. Pregnancy changes the hormones in the body that put pregnant women at greater risk for oral problems. If possible, postpone any major dental work until after the first trimester, however, if you have a dental emergency, don’t wait! Infections in the mouth can be harmful to you and your baby.

COSMETIC DENTISTRY
