A Filling Can Repair Small Cavities

Sometimes the most effective oral hygiene regimen isn’t enough to stop a small area of tooth decay from forming on one of your teeth. Most of the time a cavity is found during your regular dental checkup. If you do notice a tooth that has recently developed a small hole or a change in texture you should contact your dentist immediately. It’s important to have the cavity filled as soon as possible to keep the decay from compromising more of the tooth.

Before filling the cavity your dentist will want to examine the tooth and take a few x-rays. This will help to determine the extent of the decay and overall health of the tooth. Next they will discuss your numbing options. Most people opt to receive an injection of novocaine. Once the area is numb, your dentist will remove all of the decayed material to a clean surface to cement the new filling in place.

The material used in your filling will vary depending on the tooth’s primary function and location in your smile. Most fillings are made from gold, amalgam composite plastic and porcelain. Amalgam and composite materials can be directly applied to the cavity, while gold and porcelain fillings require two appointments.
