Modern Dentistry is Something to be Grateful For

Modern Dentistry

Thanksgiving is a time to pause and think about the many things we have to be grateful for.

Modern dentistry is something you should add to your gratitude journal. We are really blessed to live in this day and age of dental advancements. Ancient Egyptians used a mixture of crushed pumice and ash to clean and whiten their teeth. Ancient Greeks and Romans practiced dentistry by extracting decayed teeth with forceps and they used wires to stabilize teeth and fractured jaws.

In today’s world, dental procedures are routine and painless, and thankfully, we have advanced by leaps and bounds from the archaic forms of dentistry from the past.

Preventive dentistry plays a major role in modern dentistry and can help people keep their own teeth for a lifetime. In today’s world, a majority of Americans not only focus on the health aspects of keeping their teeth clean, but many are also concerned about the cosmetic appearance of their smile. Modern dentistry has changed all of that!

Dr. Shane S. Porter of Premier Dentistry of Eagle, provides modern dentistry services for the whole family, including a comprehensive list of general, restorative and cosmetic dental care. He uses the most current technological improvements and the best techniques available.

Dr. Porter is grateful for these modern advances:

Dr. Porter uses digital x-rays, a state-of the-art technology, to help diagnose your dental health with accuracy, speed and comfort. Digital x-rays are superior to the film x-rays of the past. The images are bigger and the quality of the image is exceptional. He can capture three dimensional images of your teeth and jaw in ways that improve the outcome of your treatment, while more easily seeing the complexities and challenges that may exist.

Intra-oral images taken with a camera smaller than a pen can be displayed on a screen allowing you to see the issues Dr. Porter sees. Because they are digital images, he can also more readily send the images to your insurance company, and other professionals who may need access to your x-rays.

In the not-so-recent-past, you may have been stuck with a missing tooth, or a partial denture for the rest of your life. Dental implants are revolutionizing the way we approach the problem of missing teeth. Although dental implants have been around for more than 30 years, the materials and techniques used today provide you with results not as easily achieved in the recent past.

The new methods include modern technology such as digital imaging, and high strength materials that replace missing teeth with ones that look, feel and perform like natural teeth. Dental implants are the best option for replacing missing teeth as they are natural looking, strong and secure. In many cases, your dental implant might even be stronger than a natural tooth would be. You can be grateful that dental implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth. Dental technology advances are ongoing and discoveries for new ways to diagnose your dental needs and treatments improve along with those advances. Thanks to new technology,

permanent dental crowns can now be made in the dental office during one visit. Dr. Porter and his staff can now create natural-looking ceramic crowns in their office. Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) is a high-tech system used to design and make high quality, metal-free dental restorations in one appointment.

CEREC utilizes 3D photography and CAD/CAM technology to help Dr. Porter design a virtual restoration without taking impressions and, when combined with a milling unit, he is able to build an actual crown while you are still in the dentist’s chair!

The process of taking 3D photographs is far more comfortable than the process of making

traditional dental impressions. In the past, crowns required at least two visits to the dentist and you had to endure having the gooey mold-making material in your mouth, and then wait for 2-3 weeks for the crown to come back from the lab. Of course, that meant another trip to the dentist to have the permanent crown placed in your mouth.

We are so fortunate to have techniques, anesthetics and medications that reduce or eliminate the pain and anxiety that is often associated with dental treatment.  The ability to control pain is a critical part of all dental procedures and in recent years modern dental sedation began to be explored and used. Modern dentistry provides several ways for patients to get their dental work done without being in pain.

In the past, fillings were silver and unsightly. Dr. Porter uses dental fillings that are made of tooth-colored composites made up of ground white porcelain and durable resins. These fillings are custom made to match the exact color of your natural teeth, creating a more natural appearance. These fillings are not only appealing to look at, they provide good durability and resistance to cracks that can form in silver fillings. Composite resins bond with the tooth itself,

creating a stronger structure than a filling held in place by the shape of the cavity which provides fewer chances for decay to form under the filling.

Technology has changed dentistry and it’s exciting to see what is on the horizon. Technological innovation will continue to broaden and ultimately improve dental care, allowing for same-day care that translates to fewer office visits.
