Did you know that dental crowns can be beneficial for more than just cosmetic repairs? This important dental procedure is an incredibly useful tool for a variety of reasons, helping people of all ages and from all walks of life get the dental care they need. From repairing damage to restoring strength to protecting weak teeth, dental crowns are an essential part of maintaining a healthy smile. Keep reading to discover who can benefit from getting dental crowns!

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that fits over the existing tooth to provide extra protection and strength. Dental crowns are typically made of porcelain or ceramic, although metal can also be used as needed. The material is molded to fit your tooth shape perfectly while providing essential coverage and support. Through this process, your dentist can protect weakened teeth from further damage and restore the natural shape of your teeth.

Who Can Benefit From Getting Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns can be used to benefit people of all ages! Children may need a crown if they experience extensive decay or an injury that affects the structural integrity of their tooth. Adults with weakened teeth due to age, trauma, or grinding habits can also benefit from the strength and protection that dental crowns provide. Furthermore, those with discolored or misshapen teeth may opt for a crown to restore their smile’s appearance.

In addition to providing structural support and aesthetic appeal, dental crowns can be used as part of a root canal procedure. After the damaged material inside your tooth is removed, a dental crown can be placed to protect the restored tooth from further damage. This ensures that your restorative dental care will last far into the future.

The Procedure

Dental crown placement usually requires two appointments:

First visit

Steps for a dental crown procedure include:

  • Preparing your teeth. To prepare your tooth for a crown, your dentist will need to remove some of your natural enamel. This makes space for your new crown and ensures that it will stay in place once bonded. Your dentist may also use a filling material to build up certain parts of your tooth. During this step, the main goal is to create a strong foundation for your new crown.
  • Dental impressions. Next, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth. These may be physical impressions taken with a putty-like material or digital impressions taken with a handheld scanner. Your dentist will send these impressions to a dental lab. There, a technician will use them to create your custom dental crown.
  • Temporary crown placement. It usually takes two to three weeks — sometimes longer — for a dental lab to make your new crown. While you wait on your final crown, your dentist will place a temporary one. Temporary crowns are usually made of resin or acrylic.

Second visit

When the lab finishes your new crown, they’ll send it back to your dentist’s office. During a second office visit, your dentist will:

  • Remove your temporary crown.
  • Check the shape, color and fit of your new crown.
  • Bond the new crown to your tooth using a strong dental cement.

However, at Premier Dentistry of Eagle, we offer same day dental crowns. Dr. Shane S. Porter can complete your restoration treatment in just one day with CEREC same-day dental crowns.

CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns

Rather than wait as long as 2 weeks for your new crown, you can walk into a dentist’s office and walk out with your new CEREC crown the same day. Dr. Porter will use computer-aided design (CAD) and manufacturing (CAM) to capture digital images of your tooth and jaw, design a crown, and then create that crown for installation — all right there in the office.

CEREC is an ideal solution for people who need dental crowns quickly and don’t want to go through the hassle of a long process. CEREC crowns can also be made from a variety of materials, allowing you to get the perfect restoration for your needs.

Overall, dental crowns can provide lasting protection and support for weakened teeth or to complete a restorative dental procedure. People of all ages can benefit from this versatile treatment, and CEREC same-day crowns make it quicker and more convenient than ever before.
