If you’re one of the millions of people who dread going to the dentist, sedation dentistry may be a good option for you. Sedation dentistry can make dental procedures much less stressful and even painless.

Understanding Dental Anxiety

Dental anxiety is a very real condition that affects millions of people. It can be caused by anything from past traumatic experiences at the dentist, to an underlying fear of needles or injections. It can even be linked to a general feeling of nervousness about undergoing any kind of medical procedure. Whatever the cause, dental anxiety is a condition that needs to be addressed and properly treated.

For those with unwelcome levels of nervousness or fear before, during, or after dental appointments, sedation dentistry can provide much needed relief. It helps reduce pain and discomfort associated with certain types of oral procedures while allowing people to still undergo necessary treatments

Signs of Dental Anxiety

People with dental anxiety may experience:

  • Sweating
  • Racing heartbeat (tachycardia) or palpitations
  • Low blood pressure and possible fainting (syncope)
  • Visible distress, crying or signs of panic
  • Withdrawal, or using humor or aggression to mask anxiety.
  • Some anxious people will routinely miss or avoid dental appointments and may find it difficult to undergo dental treatment regardless of whether it is simple or complex.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry refers to the use of medication and relaxation techniques to help a person feel comfortable during dental procedures. It is sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry,” but that term can be misleading because the patient does not actually go to sleep. Instead, they are in a state of deep relaxation with minimal awareness of their surroundings.

What Are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry?

There are many benefits to sedation dentistry, including:

1. Reduced anxiety and fear –

People who suffer from dental anxiety can have an easier time undergoing treatment with sedation dentistry. The medication used helps to reduce feelings of fear and stress so that patients can relax and feel comfortable.

2. Less pain –

Sedation dentistry can help to reduce a patient’s perception of pain during treatment, making it less uncomfortable and more tolerable.

3. Faster procedures –

With sedation dentistry, dental procedures can be completed more quickly, as the patient will not be distracted or uncomfortable throughout the process.

4. Improved oral health –

People who are more relaxed and comfortable during dental visits may be more likely to receive necessary treatments, resulting in better oral health overall.

5. More work can be done –

Sedation dentistry can help patients receive multiple treatments in one visit, which can save time and money.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry involves the use of sedative medications and methods to help you feel calm and at ease during your treatment. We offer three main types of sedation dentistry at Premier Dentistry of Eagle:

  • Nitrous oxide sedation – Also called laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a gas that you inhale during your treatment. Nitrous oxide is a mild form of sedation that will help you feel less anxious during your treatment. The effects will wear off within just a few minutes after we finish your treatment, so you can safely drive yourself home after your appointment.
  • Oral conscious sedation – This form of sedition involves taking a sedative pill before your appointment with Dr. Shane S. Porter. By the time of your treatment, you will feel relaxed and at ease. Oral sedation is a type of conscious sedation, meaning you will not be unconscious; however, you may not remember all of the details of your treatment.
  • IV Sedation – This form of sedation is safely administered through your veins, and it can quickly help you relax during your appointment. IV sedation is often recommended for more complex procedures, or for those with extreme dental anxiety. Most patients feel calm enough to sleep and often do not remember their treatment.
