Dental Veneers – Transforming Smiles Without Braces

Do you have any New Year’s resolutions regarding your oral health? Studies show that most people make resolutions to diet and exercise in order to improve their health and appearance. However, your smile is a major part of achieving those goals. In fact, your smile is in the top 3 things that people notice first about another person. What is your smile saying? Are you confident in showing off your smile to others? If the answer is no, dental veneers can help you get the confident smile you want in 2020!

Cosmetic Dentistry Improves a Smile

Dental veneers lie in the category of “cosmetic dentistry”. General and family dentistry services seek to help improve your oral health through examinations, screenings, removing dental decay, and treating oral health diseases. Restorative dentistry is actually repairing the teeth when they have been damaged. What we want to focus on is cosmetic dentistry, which focuses solely on improving the aesthetic appearance of a person’s smile.

Studies show that your smile will directly affect your confidence and how others perceive you. It may even affect how you perceive yourself. 1/3rd of people notice a person’s smile before anything else. And just how important is that smile? An Invisalign study found that those who had a great smile were often viewed as more confident than those who didn’t have a great smile. 58% of people viewed others as more successful and wealthier if they had straight teeth.

A better smile also made people assume that a person was healthier and confident based solely on how their teeth looked. 73% of people are more likely to trust someone with a great smile, and more employers were willing to hire someone with a great smile than those whose smiles were crooked or discolored. All that from simply having a good smile! That is why cosmetic dentistry is so important. The cosmetic services we offer can literally transform your life in 2020!

Dental Veneers: What Are They?

Dental veneers are a great way to transform your smile. They take much less time than orthodontic treatment (1-3 years) and can cover imperfections in your smile, such as:

  • Spaces and gaps in between teeth
  • Irregularly shaped teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Very worn-down teeth
  • Severely stained, discolored, or darkened teeth
  • Fractured or chipped teeth
  • Slightly misaligned teeth

Dental veneers can correct these issues because they literally mask those imperfections in your teeth. Veneers are custom-made tooth shells that rest on the front of your teeth, bonded with permanent cement. If you’ve ever wondered how celebrities get their perfect smiles, it’s likely due to dental veneers. Smiles that were once crooked suddenly become straight, white, and the same uniform shape. Teeth that are too short are made the right length to fit the size of your mouth. Gaps become filled in and discoloration is gone, and it’s all thanks to veneers.

The Application Process

If you want to transform your smile through dental veneers, plan on about 2 dental visits in-office for preparing your smile and adhering your veneers. In your initial visit, your teeth are examined to make sure no tooth decay or gum disease is present in your teeth. Impressions of your teeth are then created with our dental materials so that a custom mold may be sent to our lab. Those impressions of your teeth, along with digital images, are then used to custom-made porcelain shells that will fit over the front of your teeth.

At this first visit, we will prepare the teeth for veneers by shaving off a thin layer of tooth enamel. This will only happen to the teeth that show when you smile. We shave off that thin layer so that the teeth won’t stick out abnormally when your custom veneers are bonded to the teeth. That bonding will happen 2-3 weeks later at your second appointment.

You will be given temporary veneers during that period of time to protect the teeth until permanent dental veneers are back from the lab. Your second appointment will have us bonding your veneers to their specific tooth with our dental cement. Because only a small layer of tooth enamel was removed before bonding, and the cement hardens incredibly fast, you are able to eat and drink normally as soon as you leave the office. If you follow great oral hygiene guidelines with brushing and flossing, you can expect your dental veneers to last up to 20 years. That means, you get that perfect, straight, white smile for all those years to come before a touch up is needed!
