The Many Types of Dental Crowns

While the first word you think of when you hear the word “crown” is most likely “gold,” oral crowns actually come in many materials — including gold. Here are a few of the multiple varieties that dental crowns can come in:

Ceramic crowns. Ceramic crowns are porcelain-based, meaning they are fashioned from clay, and they are a common choice for crowns because of their appearance. Since they can be fashioned to look just like the appearance of your teeth, they are a common choice for crowns that go on pearly whites toward the front of your mouth.

Porcelain-fused crowns. Porcelain-fused crowns, also known as porcelain-fused to metal crowns, are just what they sound like — porcelain fused to metal crowns. This type of crown is strong when compared to porcelain crowns alone. If the tooth we are working on is used for grinding food, we may endorse this type of crown due to its toughness.

Golden crowns. Golden crowns, or gold crowns, are made from metallic alloys of gold or other metals. This is a great all-around option that is robust, resistant to erosion itself and harmless to your chompers and gums. A few people even favor the look of golden crowns to porcelain crowns, and long ago golden chompers were considered a status symbol! (Though we still recommend that you strive to retain all of your natural chompers!)

There are other, less-common types of oral crowns, and we’d love to tell you all about them when you come into our office next. Have you scheduled your next appointment yet? If not, please give Premier Dentistry of Eagle in Eagle, Idaho, a call at (208) 546-0655 to set up a checkup with Dr. Shane S. Porter and their team.
