The Right Way to Brush

Brushing your teeth is the first line of defense against cavities, plaque, gingivitis, and tooth decay. Dentists recommend that you brush your teeth at least twice a day. When you brush, it is worth the effort to do the job right. If you rush when you brush, you have only yourself to thank when a toothache or cavity appears.

How long should it take to brush your teeth? Two minutes. Plain and simple. This is not a task that you can do in 50% of the time if you want 100% of the benefits. What is the proper technique when it comes to brushing your teeth? A soft-bristled toothbrush should be used for this all-important job, and while we’re talking about toothbrushes, keep in mind that you should replace yours every three to four months. When brushing the surfaces of the teeth, keep the bristles flat against the teeth and use small back and forth strokes. When brushing the area near the gums, you should tilt your toothbrush so that the bristles are at a forty-five-degree angle to the gums. The most important thing to remember is to be thorough. Brush all surfaces of your teeth and take your time to do the job well.
