What Causes Stained Teeth?

Stained teeth can can happen for a variety of different reasons. Zoom can help brighten teeth that have gone dull to:

Smoking or tobacco use

One of the consequences of smoking is stained teeth. When people smoke, they decrease the oxygen circulating through their bloodstream, which leads to gum disease. However, the tar and nicotine in cigarettes causes white teeth to dull and go yellow or brown. This can happen even after smoking for only a short period of time.

Aging

As time goes by teeth can begin to darken. This is due to the enamel wearing away and revealing the dentin, which is darker, beneath it. The colors can go from being pearly white to being more gray or yellow in tone.

Food & Drink

We eat and drink different things throughout the day, so it’s no surprise this has an effect on our teeth. Unfortunately, things we eat day-to-day can cause our teeth to become stained. Everyday Health lists the top offenders to be:

  • Black coffee and tea
  • Red wine
  • Sodas
  • Fruit juices
  • Popsicles
  • Soy sauce
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Tomato sauce
  • Blueberries
  • Beets
  • Curry

Fluorosis

Some people suffer from dental fluorosis which WebMD describes as a cosmetic condition caused by being overexposed to fluoride as a child, mainly as the permanent teeth are being formed. This can cause yellow to brown staining, along with surface irregularities and noticeable pits.

Poor Dental Hygiene

Those who don’t brush well after consuming foods and drinks that cause stains are most at risk for stained teeth. Brushing and flossing work together to help remove plaque and any trace of stain-causing foods.

Medications

Certain antibiotics can cause people to have tooth discoloration with colors ranging from gray, yellow, or even brown. This most happens with the medications tetracycline and doxycycline, which are prescribed to stop the growth of bacteria.

Illness

There are a couple of different illnesses and their treatments that can discolor the teeth. This includes radiation and chemotherapy. Alternatively, stained teeth could also mean that you have a calcium deficiency.

How Does a Tooth Whitening Appointment Go?

Zoom in-office teeth whitening is a safe and effective process. Using advanced techniques, you will leave with results that will last you a long time. The appointment will usually go like this:

  • We will clean your teeth
  • Next, we will protect your gums and lips from the gel
  • We will then place a hydrogen peroxide gel will on your teeth for 15 minutes
  • Then, the Zoom LED light will be placed over your teeth to activate the hydrogen peroxide – this helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth to remove stains
  • This process will be done two more times.

Is it Painful?

This treatment can be uncomfortable. This is because some sensitivity may occur during the process and right after, but it won’t last long.

After the Session

When your teeth whitening appointment is complete, you will leave with a brighter smile. In addition, we will also provide you with information on how to care for your new smile at home. This includes receiving a touch-up kit that will help you maintain your teeth’s new color.
